Quick book recommendation for The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima.

AC and I read it a while back, and I put book 2 on hold... got that last month and AC is reading it now. I also suggested book 1 to Perry, and he read it, finishing just today. It's supposedly geared towards grades 7 and up, but Perry (a young 5th) had no problems with it and enjoyed it, so it's probably fine for someone younger than 7th.

We have a reformed street thug and his friend, a wizard and his son, a princess of the Queendom, and a missing amulet that people will kill to get back.

Standard stuff, but well done, really. Plots, subplots, things you strongly suspect, but are only hinted at here and there until you sorta bounce on your seat wondering if they're there, or if you're engaging in wishful thinking.

The story does start off a bit slow, but pressure quickly builds, and the ending is great. There are some less than wonderful spots (some clothing stuff, and some romance stuff that I think could be shortened.), but overall, it's a good read and a good start to a series. I'm looking forward to book 2. AC has it now, and I'm getting it next, damnit!, despite what Perry may think!

And I just so freaking love talking about books with both AC and Perry! There have been a few series that the three of us have all read and it is so much fun. Well, talking after is. What is less fun is waiting for the book from one child or another (especially when they take it in the car to read on the way to school, and thus the book is in the parking garage at dh's work rather than next to me!), and also waiting to talk about it until both of them have read it! Still, such fun! I hope we continue to have overlap in reading choices!
