It's Black History Month, which means twitter is abuzz with a whole bunch of white men (and alas, some white women) whining But! When is WHITE HISTORY MONTH? Wail whine renting of clothes etc.
When is white history month?
Only all the time.
But I'll give them the fact that there is not dedicated month called "White History Month", so let's grab one.
During White History Month we will talk about, in no particular order:
- the decimation of the Native populations when white (mostly) men arrived
- the following centuries of abuse of Native populations, reservations, the Trail of Tears. All of these are part of white landgrabs.
- 1619 and the birth of white caused slavery
- the KKK and Jim Crow and white people preventing Black people from voting. White history, baby!
- white history is very much white male history, so let's talk about that too: about women not having the right to vote, about women not being able to own property, get credit, initiate divorce, and now, control our own reproductive destinies. All part of white history (shut up. I know Clarence Thomas is responsible some of that. Exception to confirm the rule.)
- white privilege
We can certainly do white history month and talk about how so many things that could be better in this country are not in large part due to white men and too man white women.
ETA Two things.
I forgot Hawaii, and really, the Philippines.
And tbh. White people have accomplished some pretty fucking awesome things. This is not in any way a denial of that, but I also don't think that many of those things go ignored by history and general culture. We don't need a White History Month in the same way there needs to a Black History Month.
