I thought we were in the middle of nowhere yesterday, LOL. That was a starter-nowhere. This is a... nowhere nowhere.

I mean, there are other houses and things, but this is remote.

Let's see... we drove from Skye yesterday, stopping to explore a ruined castle (mostly legally, along with many others), there are some spectacular photos. Drove over the bridge to Eilean Donan. We didn't visit the inside of the castle, but walked around the grounds. The castle is owned by the McCraes, and there was a tribute to the OMG-So-Many McCraes who'd died in WWI, including John McCrae of the poems. Got to share that one with Linnea, who now knows why the poppies.

Then. We, um, took a detour. To our poor Google Maps navigation lady's dismay, she tried SO hard to get us back on the main road, but we were having nothing of it. I mean, the constant make a right -into a closed gate- with the following instruction being then make a u-turn. At one point she said make a left, when a left was over a cliff, and David pointed out, she'd rather send us over a cliff than on this road. She really tried to keep us off that road, and I'm glad we didn't listen, because this alternate road to Applecross was perhaps some of the most spectacular scenery we've seen on the trip. Up to a mountain pass, called Pass of the Cattle, Bealach na Ba, with a 20% grade at time, beautiful wild and remote views. Road in many places was barely one car wide, and the last bit of road up to the pass/saddle was switchbacks. This doesn't even begin to describe how remote this felt.

Road to Applecross.

After, we drove through more and more beautiful and remote -sensing a theme here?- scenery. What is funny is that you'll be on these crappy roads that are surely roads to nowhere, and you'll come upon a small village. It's different from, I think, how roads work in remote areas of the US where there would be no nothing at the end of a road that had gotten smaller and smaller and smaller. Maybe Alaska is different? Anyhow. Drove these roads, which kept on getting smaller, and turned off before we reached a place called Gairloch. From that turnoff we drove about 20 minutes to a house almost at the tip of a headlands, in a place called Erradale, where we're staying tonight, with a view on the ocean and more remote fields, LOL!

When I get back, I'll try to get photos into some sense of a story, in case anyone is interested.

Today we head to the Northern Coast of Scotland, we should end up near the wonderfully named town of John O'Groats. We aren't making it out ot the Orkney Islands, alas. Tomorrow, we'll be heading back to civilization and staying in Inverness.
