Headed home.
3 May 2022 15:32At the Oakland Airport, waiting for our flight. It was a nice break in California for us. Had a great time, a lot of mediocre-but-well-rated food, a major rowing event, we soaked up some Tahoe blue and Sierra granite vibes and had a memorable trip to Point Reyes National Seashore in the middle of a gale.
Also: how to make a smoked in rental car tolerable.
Start with car that reeks of smoke and an air filter that looks like the one on the right. Which is what we pulled from the rental. Headed to Autozone, purchased a $20 replacement, put it in. Made liberal use of Febreeze double-strength spray for the following two days. By day 3, the car was rental-car-acceptable rather than unbearable. Total cost: ~$25. Was it worth it? Hell yes. We had to go with Budget rather than Enterprise because Enterprise charged several hundred more for a pick-up in Sacramento, drop off in Oakland, so this was an acceptable cost.

A quite note about Febreeze. The car air-fresheners are useless, they are just perfume. The fabric ones and the ones called "Air" are the only ones that contain cyclodextrin, the molecule that traps the icky odors. If the ingredients don't say cyclodextrin, you are just adding loads of perfume.
