1. Oscars last night. I am not a follower of the Oscars, I usually only know they're on when I start seeing information pop up on twitter. Last night was no different until the incident. I'm not sure I really even know who Chris Rock is, despite a passing familiarity with the name. Will Smith, is, of course, one of the sexiest men alive. That said, two other things are true:
-- Chris Rock's "joke" was not a joke, it was nasty, ableist, shitty-human-being comment
-- Will Smith should not have resorted to physical violence.
If he'd gone up there, grabbed the mic and demanded an apology, that would have been an appropriate response. The 'diss my wife, I'll deck you' response is not one I admire or think is ok. I told my spouse last night that if anyone EVER insulted me in front of him, to NOT even think about punching them, LOL.
That said, there is a lot of discussion on twitter about how Black women need protection and how Will Smith did the right thing. Which got me to thinking. How would I have reacted if Dr Jackson had gone up and punched Tom Cotton, who called his wife a liar, in the face? Or Ted Cruz? Well. I had three seconds of gleeful imagining of the chaos and the outrage and how nice it would be to see Tom Cotton's with a black eye, but if I'm honest with myself, no again there. Cory Booker did it right. Violence is not, and I'm not sure it ever is, the proper response to a verbal insult. And having mulled it over for a good bit of time, I'm pretty sure that's my response no matter what.
2. Got Linnea's booklist. One of her classes is called Myth and Folklore. It requires lots of books, many of them not too expensive. One of the books, however, is Bruno Bettelheim's _The Uses of Enchantment_. I'm a bit -a lot- horrified at that. Leaving aside the plagiarism, the damage his did to children, with physical abuse, but also emotional abuse to both women and children with his "refrigerator mother" theory on the genesis of autism. It's just so unbelievably cruel and of course, 100% false, and it hurt vulnerable people. So not too thrilled that the book was assigned. I'll see about borrowing it from the library for her, in large part because I do not want to support even the estate of that man.
3. Trillium. That time of year again! First trillium of the season!
