Three things for Sunday
7 Nov 2021 18:381. HotL
Head of the Lake this morning, but bonus appearance by a Big Barge going through the cut.
I'll try to write things up and post photos tomorrow, I'm too tired this evening. Insomnia kicked my sorry ass last night and I barely got any sleep at all.
2. Daylight Saving Time
I glanced at the clock on the thermostat when I got up to go to the bathroom. 1:59, it said. I though, "Wow. Almost two. I've been awake since 12:12, after-- Wait almost 2!" I looked back and the clock said 1:00. Proof that it happened.
And OMG, the pro-DST people are about as annoying at extroverts and morning people, thinking Everyone! Will! Love! Permanent! DST! They're also as dishonest as Republicans, making statements like "After we spring forward, there are more accidents, more fatal heart attacks etc", and draw the erroneous conclusion that that the problem is that in the fall we went back to Standard Time.
I like Standard Time. I don't like the idea of sunrise at 9am, thanks. Right now, still dealing with knee issues, but normally? I'm on the trail at first light. That being at 9am would seriously make things impossible. But aside from that, they are holler that with perma-DST they can "do things after work." My dudes. Sunset in the winter here is 4:15PM or so, push it back an hour it'll be 5:15PM. Most people are still at work. I personally like standard time. Noon is when the sun at at its highest point in the sky, not 1PM. Yes, I'm sure there are states that should be in a different time zone, but standard time makes sense in a way DST does not. I don't need it to be light until 10pm in the summer, 9pm would be fine, I do need it to be light before 9am in the winter.
Our effing state legislature decided that if the Feds gave the ok, we'd go to perma-DST. This was not a vote of the people, btw. And how my senator is pushing a bill to make it happen at the Federal level, which would be horrible.
I wonder if it's a night owl thing. I loathe getting up in the morning, and would happily get up much later. I need that morning light to incentivize me to get the fuck out of bed. It's way too easy for me to shift my day four or five hours, going to bed at 2-3 am and not getting up until 9 or so. Anyhow.
LEAVE MY STANDARD TIME ALONE.
I will be writing to my senators and representative.
3. My family is coming for Christmas
The should be fun. We'd hoped to get to Vancouver, but my niece's passport renewal is taking for-freaking-ever and apparently only a few states can offer what is here in WA the enhanced ID that gets us into Canada. So Seattle it is.
I'm looking forward to this.

Date: 9 Nov 2021 20:59 (UTC)So. REAL ID is the paperwork that is needed to fly in the US (or will be by 2022 at some point). It's a standard DL/ID in most states (of which Washington was NOT one).
Enhanced ID is something else. Costs more, AND you can use to cross borders at NOT airport locations, so land and sea borders. You can also fly domestically with it. It provides proof of US citizenship since you need a whole bunch of extra paperwork to get it.
But here's the catch. Enhanced IDs are only given in a few states, and yes, MI is one of them, the others being Washington, New York, and Vermont.
Your dad probably had a Real ID, not an enhanced id.
The information online is NOT clear AT ALL and the Dept of Homeland Security blathers on about Enhanced ID and never, anywhere, mentions that it's only available in a few states.
We got Linnea the enhanced ID (since she doesn't have a DL), so she can go to Canada without her passport, and will do the same for all of us next time licenses are up for renewal. We all have valid passports, but eh, it's just easier.
Does any of this make sense?

Date: 10 Nov 2021 02:48 (UTC)on a slightly related note, Michigan is now offering "X" in addition to M and F on IDs and licenses.

Date: 10 Nov 2021 04:13 (UTC)I think the passport card works like the enhanced ID, except that it's not a DL so you have carry that as well.
The big diff: the E-ID will have an RFID chip (that Bill Gates and George Soros can use to track you down to Anthony Fauci and Joe Biden can inject you with luciferase.) AND it will have a US flag on it. The Real ID will have a star.
Totally confused yet?
