I'm a bit concerned about my boyo.

When Perry was a baby, no matter how much I nursed, he remained seriously underweight, like 5th percentile. We quickly moved to solids, after a medical check, and a visit at the breastfeeding clinic, where they tested my milk and weighed Perry before and after a feeding and everything checked out. Except that he was not gaining.

So we put him on what we called "The Butter Plan". Anything he ate had a large pat of butter in it. His oatmeal was closer to an oatmeal cookie. He wouldn't -still won't- eat nuts, so that was a no-go. But butter everywhere. Working on pincer grasp? I sauteed his freaking Cherrios in butter. Full fat ice cream. Full fat yogurt. Scrambled eggs with butter and cheese added in. It was ridiculous. I forget how many calories he was ingesting, but it was a gigantic amount.

And he did not plump up.

All three kids were sick, a few years later, at the same time. None ate much for a week or so. Linnea and AC? Maintained their weight. Perry lost a full 10% of his body weight.

Trip to Iceland, where we ate ok, but not the lavish way of which Perry had made a lifestyle? I gained weight, dh and Linnea stayed the same. Perry lost weight.

All this to say that Perry needs a lot of food, and loses weight at soon as he doesn't pay attention or isn't in a situation where he's got constant access to high calorie food.

Right now... he's rowing six mornings a week, and a few afternoons. He coaches six days a week. His workouts have stepped in intensity, since he and his coach think he should try out for the US U23 team. So lots of time spent rowing. His school quarter just started, and thank goodness that at least is a bit less intense than the past few (he's been taking a ridiculous number of credits for the past few years, trying to make up for the fact that he didn't come in with a lot, and as a result couldn't get into classes because his registration dates were so late), but it's still time spent on Zoom and thus not eating.

We're late eaters, dinner is usually past 8pm, and everyone does fine with that. Except when there is miscommunication and dinner ends up much later, and Perry falls asleep and just goes to bed without eating or just after eating a yogurt. That happened last night, when I found out that the leftovers I was going to transform into fried rice has been eaten earlier in the week and nothing else was easy to throw together. I, being a mean old mother, poked and prodded at the kid sleeping on the couch until he got up and ate dinner, late as it was.

Because, yeah, he's starting to look too thin again. :(

I'm going to have to bring some more snacks into the house, always difficult for me, and make sure dinners are ready earlier, and I'm going to have to remind him that when he steps up the intensity of his workouts, he needs to remember to step up the nutrition.

Ah well.
