So awesome
24 Jan 2021 10:13Perry rows out of Seattle, 6 days a week. He rows most days. Lake Union and the Ship Canal tend to be slightly more protected from wind and the elements than...
Lake Sammamish, which is where Linnea rows out of. She's supposed to be rowing 3 times a week, out of the 6 potential sessions, they have gotten out 1. Her November session was cancelled more often than not, and well, she hasn't bee out on on the water regularly since summer. And, I should add, summer between when smoke made conditions unhealthy and we were all stuck inside.
Perry's coach said it was ok for him to bring her so today, Linnea got to go to rowing with Perry and row in a double with him.
Two kids left, two kids came back, so this is good.
She had a great time. They were rowing in the early morning, before dawn, and she was horrified that headlamps, in addition to boat lights, weren't mandatory (*). She'd never rowed in "the dark" in Seattle before, where dark is a relative term, only on Lake Sammamish, where, dudes, dark is dark.
They did about 12km, which is three times what she usually gets in her practices. Perry was able to match her stroke, because he's a pretty damn good rower, and he forced her into doing pieces at 16 strokes per minute, which forces her to go slooooooowly, since at 5ft tall her stroke is so short, she uses rate to compensate for her lack of reach. But apparently they got along well, were able to keep up with the other boats, (actually, they rowed longer and looped the other boats easily, so I guess Perry wasn't slowed down too much by her). Matt, Perry's coach, said they rowed well enough together than she was welcome back every Sunday. I don't know if she'll go, but knowing she could has her pleased to no end.
(*) Boat lights are legally mandated on all waterways. Linnea's rowing club doesn't let rowers out without headlamps in addition.
