nwhikerSmall scrimmage this morning on Lake Sammamish for Linnea.
Dh and I, of course, went to the park where one can see part of the course to view what we could.
It rained. The whole time. All the parents were huddled under umbrellas in jackets, it was cold and, well, wet.
We saw the two races. And as the kids rowed back to the boathouse where a hot brunch awaited them, the parents trudged back to car, damp and chilled.
As we did so... it stopped raining. It's been grey ever since, but no rain.
Umm, grr? :)
A word on the race today. This was what they call "captains' boats". A few kids are selected as captains and they get to pick their teams/boats/oars. Sounds awful, right? Like when one was never picked for the team in middle or high school gym class.
It doesn't seem to work that way, strangely enough. Even Linnea, who is not the tallest strongest athlete, so presumably not picked first, loves the whole thing. The captains seem to able to pick a group of girls that like each other, or something. Anyhow, they've been racing in these captain's boats since November, and competed for "meters" off the water over Thanksgiving and winter breaks, and today was the last race. Linnea's boat has been surprisingly competitive, coming in first or second in all the races they've done (both internal, and with another team), and they've had a great time.
I don't know if it's the quality of the girls (and boys, the boys team does the same thing) chosen as leaders, but all of these highly competitive kids managed to get themselves into more or less evenly balanced boats, and had fun at practice and racing.
It's a shame that they don't pay as much attention to the "spirit" of the boat during the competition season. These captain's boats may not be the ultra-fastest, but they are certainly the most functional and happy.
Weird, eh? For me and dh, who both have bad memories from team picking in k-12, it's incomprehensible, but there you have it.
