1. Perry made it to the varsity men's final in his single this past weekend. He didn't do as well in the final (he was probably 25lbs lighter and 3 in shorter than all the other guys), but he rowed a good race, and getting to the final, again all things considered, was awesome. His double -also the varsity double- came in third in their heat and thus was this close to making it to the final as well, but didn't because, it being a big category, they only took top 2 from each heat.

2. He got into a college! Western Washington University, where I'm going for my masters. He'll row with them and I think it'll be a good place for him. Off the waiting list. I think I slept a full night for the first time in months after we got the news. Very clear the combination of "C student" and "Ivy League level test scores" did not amuse admissions offices at most places he applied (and I can't blame them! It doesn't amuse me either) so I'm thrilled he got into Western. I think it will be a good place for him. Plus rowing. Did I mention he'll get to row?

3. The words I never EVER expected I'd write, so I'm boldfacing them: Linnea medalled at Regionals. Her boat, Sammamish Boat B, placed 3rd in the second novice girl's category. (Her team is Sammamish Rowing Association. Lake Sammamish is a local lake, named after the tribe that used to live there). That was a major surprise. They got third by 0.01 seconds, which is great for them, but after I got done being thrilled and excited for her, I ended up feeling sick to my stomach for the poor GreenLake girls. I've said this about the Olympics thread, but I HATE races when the results end up demonstration the precision of the timing equipment, not the athletes, ya know? That close probably should have been a tie.

At some point, I have to write up the story of Sammamish Boat B. It's been... a bit of a slog and adventure for those girls, and they came together beautifully in the end. Linnea has maintained that she was quitting rowing as soon as regionals were done, but now she's planning on going back next fall, and well, maybe she could do the summer program as well? I need to write it up because in the story of Sammamish Boat B, there is also the story of the making of a rower, and how the girl in the bow seat who is smaller than the coxswain turned from my sweet little nut made of marshmallow fluff into a fit, strong rower.
