Happy New Year.
31 Dec 2017 08:06Man. Here's hoping 2018 is better than 2017, which fucking sucked. 2016 was ok until a certain day in November that will live in infamy.
And here is something that I find ridiculously cool about today, 31 Dec 2017: all the adults (in countries where the age of majority is 18) were born in the 1900s. All the minors, in the 2000s.
We're back from a fun few weeks in Louisiana. They didn't start out fun, since my mother was in the hospital for a few days with pneumonia and blood clots. Scary scary stuff. On the other hand, she was scared enough to stop smoking, at least for now. Considering that my father dying of lung cancer didn't do it, she really must have been scared.
But aside from that, it was wonderful. I adore my niece and nephew, they are so cute and fun, and just bright, inquisitive adorable kids. And Perry completely charmed them. And vice versa. He hung out with my nephew, and carried my niece around on his shoulder. He napped with kids draped over him, and gave them cuddles. He showed a gentle and caring side of himself that made my heart glad.
A photo of my mom and the kids. My lovely 27 year old niece wasn't there, alas. We missed her. A lot.
For some odd reasons, and because of a bizarre idea of my aunt's gleaned from a New York Times article, we sat through Mass at a Catholic church. It went pretty much like any mass I've been to in a Catholic church, but I deeply appreciated the amount of community emphasis there was. FWIW, at this place: Saint Augustine Catholic Church. And a few days later, we just happened onto the St Louis Cathedral open for mass and went in. What a beautiful place. I'd have happily spent an hour or two exploring. I've been to New Orleans a few times but I'd never managed to get in.
Anyhow. Having MIL over for brunch today, and I should get on with things.
