We tried to do the Lake Hyas trail for the first time back in 2000. AC, almost three, refused to use the Forest Service Pit Potty, though she obviously had to go. We tried for about 2 hours to get her to go, but finally gave up (Linnea in Yellowstone, years later, reminded me of this.). Anyhow, we were then treated to a ride back to first Roslyn, about 30 miles away, the first 15 on first on very bad dirt road, while she screamed in pain that she had to go. No bathrooms in Roslyn (the town was basically touristy-shoppes, all closed, and taverns, where she was not allowed). We had to drive an additional 20 miles back to a rest stop on I90, iirc, before she found an acceptable potty. It was fucking miserable.

And yet, we tried the Lake Hyas trail again a few years later, with Perry in the backpack. And about 0.5 mile into the hike, had to turn back: the mosquitoes were fierce, and probably ate citronella for breakfast.

Today was the third attempt. FAIL. Big time.

So, there are two stream crossings on the road to the trailhead. The first one has always been easy, the second one problematic. The first time we took it (Potty FAIL), dh and I waded in snow melt to make a best case path for our little Honda Accord. After we got through, on the way back, and were changing into other shoes, a scout troop showed up in the Toyota 4wd. Dh suggested a path for them, the one we'd just got our little car though on, but the guy said, hey, no problem, and... got stuck. The kids were all out trying to push him out of the water as we drove away.

Today we were wary. The last update on teh hike that we'd seen said the crossing should be passable by SUVs but not cars. We havea 4WD Honda Pilot, which we hoped would get through.

Then we got to the crossing. We measure. See dh wading around in snowmelt measuring?

The water was high and fast: the past few days have been warm and the water level was up. I'm betting we could have gotten through, several trucks did while we were hesitating, but the question then becomes: Can we get back in the late afternoon when the levels are even higher?. We decided, like a few other people to turn back.

FAIL on Hyas Lakes. We might try again, having failed three times. Next fall.

Anyhow, what to do? There was another hike not too far off that we figured we could do.

OMG.Most boring hike EVAH. It was the Cooper River trail hike, and you don't see much of the Cooper River. There is no real destination, no major trail events, just a most boring hike. It was pretty. But not spectacular, if that makes sense.

A few trail photos anyhow, of course. The rest of the set is at my flickr

They were supposed to just cross the stream, but had to stop to play for a bit. This is on the way back at the stream seen above.

I'm glad we got out at all, but that hike will not be a repeat destination!
