The child for whom counting was intellectual and not intuitive, for whom the number line was a vague concept that had to be reasoned through, not just understood... that child is taking calculus II.

And with just class instruction, no help from dh or me, figured out how to actually calculate volumes by slicing.

Yeah, for those for whom math is intuitive, maybe that doesn't sound like much... but it's a three-step process, involves integration, and is math beyond what many people (I suspect) will ever do and also beyond what most people will ever need.

I'm so proud of her.

And she's thrilled and excited. I love that kid.

1. Yesterday was the Husky Open. Linnea's team raced, she did not, sigh, poor little nut. She works so hard but 5ft1in is an almost impossible thing to overcome if you want to actually row. But Perry raced. They did well from a time standpoint, but they were against two UW teams, LOL. But his boat -a four- is one of the team focus boats: they've decided to send two fours to Nationals rather than an 8, at least as this point. We shall see. I have video, or rather dh does, I'll try to link it later. What I love about the Husky open is that a lot of the racing happens in the Montlake Cut, which is incredible for spectators.

2. Well, that wasn't a success. Perry, Linnea, and I went and bought relatively high end -ie well-made and thought out- harnesses for the cats. We figured that Twisp and Auri might like to go on walks. Twisp is such a marshmallow, and Auri, while not a marshmallow and rather high strung, loves to follow especially dh around the countertop, trotting next to him. So harnesses and one leash because one at a time, we're not stupid. They both took the harnesses ok (*). We took Twisp outside the front door, to the front walkway. He looked around. He stopped. He turned back towards the front door and started pawing it. We tried for about five minutes and while he did look around a bit, and didn't lay down and refuse to do anything, he was having nothing to do with walking, and indeed kept on trying to get back inside. No dice. Next, Auri. She did a bit better, getting off the front walkway and rolling herself around on the driveway. But that was it. They walked around to the deck (the old front door) and she saw a door, went for it, and... demanded to be let in. No dice, again. (*) Anne-Chloe tried to take BamBam out many years ago. He promptly escaped and went to hide. We had not plans to take him out, but since Perry tried to put a harness on him, figuring if it worked, we'd be good. Um, yeah, no. He rolled around the floor trying to escape it, for the 10 or so minutes he had it one. No dice, again and again. I know people say it might take a while for them to get used to it, and yes, it would be awesome to get them outside, aka fun for us, but. They like going out to hang out on the back deck, provided there is no s-word and it's warm out, so maybe that'll be the extent of their outside careers.

3. Linnea called in tears. She went back up to uni today and walked into a door-left-open room to find out her roommate had moved out. No text, and didn't bother closing up behind her. Linnea is devasted. She tried. She jumped through all the hoops the friend group told her she'd have to to retain their friendship, and they ended up all ditching her anyhow (something we told her would probably happen). RA has been less than helpful. Linnea tried communicating constantly, and got rebuffed at every single turn (I've seen the text threads) and then roommate told the RA Linnea wasn't communicating. Anyhow, clusterfuck and a half, she's really upset, and doesn't know how to deal with needing to get another roommate for next year. I know she's my kid, but everyone who knows her has been shocked to find out she's been blamed for the whole situation. Anyhow, she's effectively has a single for the rest of the year, and now won't have to worry about waking anyone up when she gets up at 4am, LOL.
