Poking fun at Avatar

Most everyone I know has had positive reactions to Avatar, which I thought dumb but beautiful. So... expect mocking, and sorry for those who really did like it. I'm merciless when it comes to Twilight too.

Sigh. This reminds me of my reaction to nearly all animated films: "Haven't we seen this plot before, say, about a zillion times?" It makes me crazy that the filmmakers apparently think the audience can't possibly stay interested unless there's a lot of noise and chase scenes and stuff blowing up and wisecrackery and slapstick (not necessarily humor).

I haven't seen Avatar so I don't know whether the preceding paragraph applies to it. But your example of two interchangeable movies -- and don't forget the impossibly thin and shapely characters -- made me think of how interchangeable so many movies are.

Oh, but there are some awesome animated films. Check out Spirited Away someday if you haven't: it's incredible. As is Howl's Moving Castle. And Kiki's Delivery Service. Why yes, I AM a Miyazaki fan!

In this case, I'd blame the big budget can make oodles of money, so let's keep the story simple and done before.

Yes on interchangeable. What is mind boggling with Avatar is how well they managed to integrate the "real" person with the cgi ones. It's well done. The plot? Weeeeeellll... See above!

Spirited Away is in my Netflix queue. I was delighted by Howl's Moving Castle, even though I adore the book and the movie is invariably not as good as the book, eh?

I should have qualified my comment about interchangeable movies with "(Yes, Pixar, I'm talking about you)".
