Perry is racing at U23 Nationals this year. He wasn't quite ready to do, but with a late December bday, he loses a whole year of eligibility (as in, he's not longer a U23 three days after he turns 22, thanks calendar year eligibility), so he'd have two chances, this year and next.
He was going to Nationals as a coach so tagged on a few extra days and a lot of wheedling to borrow a boat. He was supposed to use one of the boats they had trailered down, but I guess they (*) decided to leave today rather than Wednesday, so he had to scramble for boatage. (*) Trailering is done by I don't know what club, bringing down boats for at least 5 or 6 clubs.
Anyhow, these were the time trials, and while he didn't place well, they're all going to the final tomorrow. And it was a PR. He's happy with that. As are we.
He really should be rowing as a lightweight, he's pretty much only 10lbs over without making any changes to diet, so it's doable. As just under 6ft, there is no way he's ever going to be competitive against 6ft2+ rowers!
Next year, I don't know if he'll be able to get the sweet deal of having flight etc paid.
