Half of my nextdoor is arguing that rent should be illegal, and landlords should just let people live rent-free at their properties. The other half... disagree.

Now a "beloved" (*) restaurant is closing and the usual suspects are blaming Governor Inslee and the extra unemployment. Even though we're at pretty close to full employment. But people don't want to work shitty food service jobs with no benefits if they can avoid it. (*) Never went there. It was open -lights on, OPEN sign, door propped open- one evening and dh and I walked in with kids, pretty normal thing to do right? We were immediately asked to leave because the owner was throwing a private pre-opening party. It was kinda like... then don't turn on your open sign? And pretty embarrassing, to be honest. We had no idea they hadn't already been open for weeks. Anyhow, we never went back, and yes, it's probably been over a decade.

And... the homeless camp is coming back to the local church. We no longer have bus service, so these folks are trapped in the immediate area. Last few times, when we at least had commuter buses, it was already pretty annoying, they congregated at the library often with dogs, smoking by the front door, and had fights, smoked marijuana, and set fires in the park next to us. We had some thefts (our house was broken into one year, with AC cowering in the bathroom hoping they wouldn't find her, while someone rummaged through stuff.), but also petty thefts. The church always claims that it's not their campers that are the problem, it's other unhoused folks coming over to hang around, but eh, that doesn't change reality that brining a whole bunch of people to an area with no public transportation, minimal police presence, no services, and not really anything to do... well, it doesn't end well. Plus, eh, I don't think the camps are a good idea to begin with, we need to dump $$$ and resources, and start aggressively (*) moving to help people get housed. Then there is my optimistic side than thinks "well, maybe Metro will at least restore our commuter bus?" LOL. Anyhow, no responses on the nextdoor thread yet, I'm just waiting. (*) not being aggressive with the unhoused people, but with the pace of the program.

Guy who keeps on sending Urgent Alerts -these go to my email- every time he sees a coyote. Dude, where are you from? Because I see coyotes on a routine basis -so do you, judging by the number of alerts!- and it's not a big deal. I see bobcats/cougars less often, feel free to warn about that, buy coyotes? No. (Note: everyone around me appears to see bears, including all of my neighbors. I've never managed to see one, but I know they're around and dh has seen scat.)

Nobody buys filing cabinets any longer. Trying to sell yours for $150 where there are least three other people listing them for free is not likely to get you any sales.

Person who posted video of a cooper's hawk at their garden fountain? Thank you, that was so cool to see. Same comment to the person who managed to catch a cool shooting star photo during the Perseids. I was outside for over an hour and saw zip so I went in.

And good news... I haven't seen anyone mention that porch pirates should be shot in the past few weeks!

Last item: people, keep your freaking cats indoors. :_( So so sad to see all the "lost cat" posts.
