I am so fucking SICK of the media saying things like "the Dems need to nuke the filibuster NOW if they want to retain any credibility!"
That's nice, bub. Considering we have two "Democrats" in our midst who have said they won't vote to nuke the filibuster, how is that supposed to work? There isn't much Schumer et al can do as long as Manchin and that stupid Sinema continue to claim that they won't vote to remove it.
These two senators have veto power. Like McConnell, they are drunk on power, and they know they can force their agenda -or lack thereof- on the Democrats. Poor went the minimum wage. Sinema, clearly an idiot, said it wasn't appropriate to pass it through reconciliation -majority vote- all the while saying that she wouldn't vote to remove the filibuster, so it would need 60 votes it will never get to pass.
If these two don't shape up, Biden's agenda is effectively dead.
Because Democrats, unlike Republicans, don't vote lockstep. They think, sometimes wrongly, for themselves. It means the Democratic party will probably never become a Q-Party, or engage in a cult of personality like the QOP has for Trump (though Obama might have come close in 2008. That was scary at times), but it also means that when things are close, people like Sinema and Manchin can hold everything hostage.
Reporters implying that "all" we have to do it is "kill the filibuster" ignore the fact that we don't have the votes for that, and then blame Dem leadership for not being up to the task. As long as the the Dem side of the aisle is 50 individuals, their inability or unwillingness to vote lockstep will haunt us.
