What are you roasting for Thanksgiving?
We're having hydra.
Seriously, I bought three turkeys this year. Two from Trader Joe's, 12# ones: one for us, and one for MIL/SIL, we're bringing them over a full meal. One cheapie from Costco, the one portrayed: the breast was removed and frozen, the rest, along with the necks from the two TJ's ones, were used to make the gravy base. I usually use whatever chicken parts are cheapest at the supermarket, but they've been out of chicken for a few days so I just got a whole cheap turkey and used that.
I would have done roast chickens for all, but Linnea looks forward to a turkey drumstick, so I decided to go with the smallest turkeys I could find.
Desperately trying to drum up some enthusiasm for the holiday. The only good things are that I don't have to see my sister-in-law and I'm trying two new dessert recipes. I'll post them if they're any good.

Date: 27 Nov 2020 21:23 (UTC)Zane opted to eat turkey so I didn't even have to cook a vegetarian main dish.
Had a turkey adventure though. I always order from our co-op, although I'm beginning to question it (I'm no longer sure it's from a more sustainable operation than Big Grocery uses). Usually when picking up, they ask what size you want, and I'll give a range. The guy this time just heard "large" and proceeded to give me a 24 (!!!!) pound turkey, but I didn't notice until we were home - otherwise I might have asked for something smaller before paying. Anyway, we ended up spatchcocking it, but then we didn't have a bag big enough to brine that split open monster. So I cut it in half. Then we couldn't fit two pans in the oven at the same time, so I cooked them one after the other. Now we have SO MUCH TURKEY. The total opposite of my "tiny thanksgiving" niece (see comment on pastry picture post).

Date: 27 Nov 2020 22:49 (UTC)BTW, the whole turkey won't fit etc thing? Is EXACTLY how things would have worked in my house as well. So you know.
I sense turkey pot-pie, shredded turkey bbq sandwiches, and turkey soup in your future! :)
