My predictions, based on absolutely nothing, of what the long term outcome of covid-19 will be... I mean, assuming humanity isn't wiped out and Station 11 describes the new reality.
Realistic:
-- Permanent vote by mail
-- Better access to sick leave, I don't think it will be perfect or even where I want it to be, but... better.
Pie in the sky:
-- Teacher pay increases.
-- The restaurant industry is in a legit crisis... but how about when they come back, they get rid of effing tipping? This would not be such a crisis if it weren't for that, I think.
-- A more vocal push towards universal health coverage... M4A is not the only way to reach universal coverage.
-- A larger awareness of public health, and that appointing ideologues to high places in government isn't a good idea. Imagine a competent head at the CDC...
-- I hope to hell that anti-vaxxers are shunned for the morons they are, and shut down completely when it comes to the ability to avoid mandatory vaccinations. Would it have helped with this, now? No. Would it help stop the spread of flu at the same time? Yes.
-- That we will come out of this with more of a concept of ourselves as a cohesive group of people. Maybe not the tight knit fabric of Scandinavia, but a sense of having been through this as a country, we will move on as a country. Oh there will be outliers and maybe I'm too optimistic... but France got it's national health care system started in 1945... and they didn't exclude the people who'd supported Vichy.
