As Times Change
24 Mar 2023 13:07Linnea is having a small rowing crisis, I suspect she's going to end up quitting. When it all boils down to it, no matter how hard she works, no matter how many kgs she can deadlift, overcoming 5ft isn't happening.
It was always obvious that she was going to be short.
When she was just on the cusp of puberty, I asked two doctors for a referral to Children's Endocrinology to ask if maybe puberty blockers could be prescribed, to give her a few extra years to grow. The hospital would not see her without a primary care referral.
I got nowhere with either doctor. Indeed, one of them gave me a lecture on how dangerous puberty blockers were and how stupid I was (not her words, but the message) to even want to consider them just to allow Linnea a few extra inches of growth.
And now, just a decade later, I think how they're willing to say they're perfectly safe to give to trans kids.
I suspect, tbc, that they are pretty damn safe. And I'm pretty sure they were prescribing them to trans kids back then too. I'm just bitter that that option wasn't available to Linnea, and that I was made to feel like an irresponsible parent for even thinking about it.
Ah well.
