I fucking HATE DST

I HATE DST. HATE IT.

I do love the late summer evenings, when it isn't dark until almost 10pm. But I also love the days around the winter solstice that are so short, and have a light that is different from any other (apricity means the warmth of the sun of winter. I love that word.)

Going to DST year round, which is being pushed by many, will completely change the character of those days, and I don't want that. I'd rather stay on standard time.

I also don't relish the thought of days when the sun doesn't rise until 9am.

We'll see if the daylight savers win out and if we go to DST year round. I hope not.

But I will fully admit that I won't mind not having to switch twice a year!

Well, yeah, but...

Paul Gosar, the dude whose whole family made political ads against him/supporting his opponent, has had to go into self-quarantine due to, he says, "the Wuhan virus".

Twitter is all aghast as the racism of calling covid-19 "the Wuhan virus".

Because WHO made it clear, a few weeks ago, that they did not want to tie the virus to the location, saying that “[w]e had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people.”

Because tying a name to a geographical location etc could lead to racist blame of some people/country for the disease. A lot was made of that as well during the SARS epidemic, where SARS, btw, is Severe Acute Respiratory syndrome.

You know, that all well and good, but I am a bit of a skeptic when it comes to the racism angle, since we go have a disease called MERS, Middle-Eastern Respiratory Syndrome, that popped up back in 2012, ie after SARS.

So, eh. Yeah, calling it the "Wuhan virus" is definitely racist. However, claiming that the nomenclature WHO and by extension most of us use and chose is free of racism is a wee bit of a stretch.
