Plastic vs woo.
5 Jun 2019 14:59I used to love my local food coop.
Then they jumped the shark into a spiral of paranoid anti-science bs.
For example, an OMG scary story about OMG CHEMICALS in our food.... illustrated with a the base formula for.... an amino acid. OK, clearly, some lack of fact checking.
But also studies promoting organics blown out of proportion, a study published in a fly-by-night pay-to-publish journal attributed to a leading journal with a similar name, and Monsanto, which is NOT my fave corporation, is often portrayed as the root of all evil to the point of ridiculous. Let's not even mention GMOs.... The letters to the editor in the monthly newsletters are a study of woo and anti-scientific conspiracies... Most recent? A fucking NURSE saying we should not trust Fred Hutch Cancer Institute for advice on cancer prevention because they "make their money" from "the business of cancer". So eh. They sell all manner of woo crap, from homeopathic "remedies" to herbal extracts, and supplements galore, most of which don't, um, don't anything but cost $$.
So over the years, I've been shopping there less and less, just feeling that I didn't want to promote the extreme-stupid-anti-science crap that they are now espousing.
But.
They're also really good about reducing plastic packaging. I can get strawberries, for example, in a cardboard carton (at a ridiculous price, granted) rather than an evil plastic clamshell.
So I'm finding myself deciding to support woo in order to reduce plastic consumption.
