Barclay Lake

No potties at trail head. There is supposed to be a trail pit potty, but some jerk(s) kicked it to bits, so um... not so much.
We've done this trail before, long time ago... It was AC's first solo log bridge crossing, on a bridge that had been half destroyed the previous winter: a log had fall over it, perpendicular to the log bridge, leaving it V-shaped with a log to climb over in the middle.
Now it's much nicer:

Pretty much a Cadillac log bridge.
Let's see... trail heads down initially, never too rough or nasty. Cross the river, up to the lake. That's about it. No nasty roots, not terrible drop offs, a nice trail for small kids. Linnea did great.
We rotated the kids in as "chef de rang" ie, line leader. AC for 15 minutes, with Perry behind her, dh behind him, then Linnea then me. The goal was to keep Perry and Linnea separated at all times. It worked well, as a system, we'll be doing that again.
The lake was beautiful. This photo seriously does not to it justice.

Most impressive: Mt Baring to look up... and up... and up... to:

The kids at the lake:

Linnea got in big trouble for picking a wild violet. Big trouble. I honestly think this the first time one of my kids has disobeyed the "You do NOT pick wildflowers EVER" rule. She's a scofflaw on flowers already, she's picked some from the garden before and gotten yelled at, so as a repeat offender, we really read her the riot act. She's old enough to know better.
I got some flower photos, nothing interesting to anyhow else, and there are some other hike photos in a set on flickr.
My favourite bit: a tree perched upon a Really Big Rock. I swear if you knew the password or the runes to draw on the rock, it's open, I'm sure it's a portal to an other world where elves and fairies exist. Seriously.

From the ground to the top of the rock is about 8ft, dh days. The tree on top was beautiful, it was... magical.
When we got back, dh insisted on a photo of us in front of the Pilot. Why? Because have never gone to a busy trailhead (about 20 cars) and gotten such an awesome stop. I mean... after hiking 4.5 miles, who wants to walk an additional 50ft?

So there. The kids did great, they had a good time, they ate trail mix. Heh.
